Doctor Who-Spearhead From Space DVD Review

Doctor Who-Spearhead From Space Special Edition is now available on DVD through BBC Warner Home Video.  The first time this story was on DVD was back in 2001.  This story marks the first appearance of the new Doctor to the series, Jon Pertwee!  This is also the only time on the series that the story was entirely done on film!  There was a technicians strike and no videotape operators were available.  The story is an invasion of aliens that can manipulate plastic into killing machines.  They easily invade by coming down in meteorite storms.  A regeneration story that was a lot easier on the Doctor than future stories.  The aliens that are the Nestenes show up again in the “Terror of the Autons” and in the new series episode “Rose”.  The extras on this disc are two audio commentaries with Nicholas Courtney, Caroline John, producers Derrick Shewwin and Barry Letts, Terrance Dicks and Robin Squire, a making of documentary and a short documentary on the challenges of Doctor Who on Television in 1970, a spoof on the UNIT group, a photo gallery with production notes on the story and a coming soon trailer.

Doctor Who-Death to the Daleks DVD Review

Doctor Who-Death to the Daleks, the last Pertwee Dalek story is now available for the first time on DVD from BBC Warner Home Video.  It was the third story of Jon Pertwee’s final season as the Doctor.  Also starring is Elizabeth as Sarah Jane Smith for her third adventure with the Doctor.  The story concerns the Doctor taking Sarah Jane on a mini vacation on a distant planet when a energy drain causes the TARDIS to crash land on the planet Exxilon, where the Exxilons are in the middle of a battle between the Daleks and the Marine Space Corp over a mineral called “Parrinium” that for humans is an antidote for a terrible space plague that is covering the galaxy!   The guest stars on this story are John Abineri (Robin of Sherwood), Duncan Lamont (Adventures of Robin Hood) and Joy Harrison (Space:1999).   The extras on this set are somewhat scant but interesting none the less.  There is an Audio Commentary with the Julian Fox and Director Michael E Briant, a making of documentary, Studio Recordings, and On the Set piece from the movie “Doctor Who & the Daleks”, Photo Gallery and Coming soon trailer.   The video quality of the episodes is quite good considering the age of the videotapes.  A story worth seeing with a good cast and supporting characters.

Doctor Who-The Krotons DVD Review

The Krotons, the final full story of the Patrick Troughton era to be put to DVD is now available through BBC Warner Home Video.  The story starts when the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe land on a unnamed planet of a society that are called the Gonds which ever so often are given the chance to be a “companion” of the Krotons, a robotic society that were in essence, pulling out all the smart Gonds and leaving the rest to become slaves of the Krotons!  A weak story to start the writing career of the Great Who writer, Robert Holmes but is far better than the previous story from the beginning of the season “The Dominators”.   This disc has the usual extras, which the Who extras are the best!  There is an audio commentary with the late Phillip Madoc (Eelek), Richard Ireson (Axus), and Gilbert Wynne (Thara), a making of documentary, a doc on Patrick Troughton and a photo gallery and a Coming Soon trailer.  All & all, a fair story.
