SATURDAY MORNING MEMORIES-THE BUGALOOS COMPLETE SERIES DVD REVIEW

A blurb from Rhino Home Video about “The Bugaloos-The Complete Series: Any history of rock ‘n’ roll’s British Invasion must certainly include The Bugaloos, the four-bug rock sensation of Tranquility Forest. From the limitless imagination of Sid and Marty Kroft comes this Saturday-morning TV classic from 1970. So get back to where you’ve always belonged-in the Kroft universe of young heroes, goofy puppets, great songs, and a million laughs.

One of the better Sid & Marty Kroft series was “The Bugaloos” with four young people from England that came a few years after another 4 that conquered the music world. Not to say that the Bugaloos had anything in comparison with the Beatles but they were quite popular in their own right. Also starring in the series was Martha Raye who in the 1940s was quite a popular comedic actress. Along with the group was Billy Barty who is one of the most popular little persons in show business! This set is great and is packed full of extras: Audio Commentaries on select episodes with some of the stars of the show along with photo galleries and interviews with the cast.

CANDID CAMERA:GREATEST MOMENTS DVD REVIEW

A short blurb from Rhino Video about Candid Camera-Greatest Moments-
Candid Camera, America’s longest-running entertainment series, has been making people smile since 1948. Allen Funt’s simple concept was to catch people “in the act of being themselves”, creating what can be arguably be called the first reality series. Today Peter Funt continues the family tradition, and here he presents a handpicked collection of memorable moments from over five decades of Candid Camera.

The phenomenon that was Candid Camera is here on this disc as a compilation of greatest moments of the show’s long history. Candid Camera actually started out as a radio show called “Candid Microphone” and in the early fifties on TV as “Candid Camera” hosted by the late Allen Funt and later with his son Peter Funt and Suzanne Sommers showed the set up of the practical joke. There’s nothing better than to see a real person’s reaction to a situation. The disc has chapters that span through the years and on different types of candid behavior. It also has celebrities in the action to fool the person such as Woody Allen, Dolly Parton and Mohammad Ali to name a few.

VIDEO

The video quality is very good considering the age of the material!

Audio

Was originally recorded in Mono. It is also Mono on this set.

Verdict

FATHER BROWN SET 1 TV DVD REVIEW

A blurb from Acorn Media about Father Brown Set 1: With a distinct twinkle behind his spectacles, Kenneth More brings G.K. Chesterton’s beloved Father Brown to the screen in a classic British television series. When it comes to amateur detective work, don’t let this priest’s absent-minded air & penchant for an occasional tipple fool you.

The great late Kenneth More starred in a series called “Father Brown” about a priest who solves crimes. The show was produced in 1974 but not shown in the US till the early 1980’s. This set has the first 7 episodes of the series. The show was shown on PBS’ “Mystery” hosted by Vincent Price at the time. The show had an array of stars from the BBC. The only thing that the show had against it and all BBC programs of that era was any outdoor scenes were filmed on grainy 16 mm film and the indoor scenes were done on videotape. No fault of Acorn Media. Acorn even has an explanation on the back of each DVD cover about the quality, which is very good. The set also has a GK Chesterton Biography and Cast filmographies.

VIDEO

The video quality is great! Episodes run approx 52 minutes each.

Audio

Was originally recorded in Mono. Is also in Mono but very clear!

Disc 1- 1. “The Hammer Of God” with William Russell and Peter Hawkins
2. “The Oracle Of The Dog”
3. “The Curse of the Golden Cross” with Bella Emberg
4. “The Eye of Apollo”

Disc 2- 5. “The Three Tools Of Death” with James Hyter
6. “The Mirror of the Magistrate”
7. “The Dagger with Wings” with T.P. McKenna and Michael Sheard

Extras

Disc 1: Cast filmographies
G.K. Chesterton Biography

Disc 2: None

Verdict

A well-acted drama, which “Murder She Wrote” no doubt got their inspiration from.

FATHER BROWN SET 2 TV DVD REVIEW

A blurb from Acorn Media about Father Brown Set 2: Heaven Help the Murderer who crosses paths with G K Cheterton’s beloved detective, Father Brown. Seemingly to confound criminals with his keen observations and inescapable logic.

This set concludes the series with the final 6 episodes. The theme music from the show is excellent. The last part of the series the Father had an assistant. His name is Flambeau who at one time was a thief but now is working on the right side of the law. What I found neat was the actor who plays Julius Brayne in the episode “The Secret Garden” is also the voice of Jeff Tracy in the Gerry Anderson series “The Thunderbirds” and the character “M” from the James Bond series, Bernard Lee is also in one of the episodes. The set includes a G.K.Chesterton Biography and Cast filmographies.

VIDEO

The video quality is great! Episodes run approx 52 minutes each.

Audio

Was originally recorded in Mono. Is also in Mono but very clear!

Disc 1- 1. “The Actor and the Alibi” with John Stratton and Roberta Tovey
2. “The Quick One” with Bernard Lee and Christopher Benjamin

A short blurb from International Voyage about The Sweeney Season 1:” Britain’s first hard hitting, police based television series delves deep into the gritty encounters of the “Flying Squad “ (nicknamed “The Sweeney”), the elite investigation unit of London’s Police Force and the seedy underworld of organized crime.

THE LAST DETECTIVE SERIES 1 TV DVD REVIEW

A blurb from Acorn Media about The Last Detective Series 1: He’s gentle, old-fashioned, and decent; nice even when he’s drunk. But these qualities only earn Detective Constable “Dangerous” Davies (Peter Davison, CAMPION, DOCTOR WHO) the scorn of his fellow detectives in a small London police station.

What a refreshing take on a crime show! The character is basically a loser but still solves crimes and wins now and again. Suitably played by Peter Davison (Doctor Who, All Creatures Great & Small) he lives through humiliation by his peers at work and not much of a relationship with anybody other than a friend of his who they both likes dogs played by Sean Hughes (The Commitments). This set has the feature length pilot and 3 episodes running about 69 mins each. There is also Cast Filmographies and a biography of the Author that the show was based on.

THE LAST DETECTIVE SERIES 2 TV DVD REVIEW

A blurb from Acorn Media about The Last Detective Series 2: As disrespected, disheveled, and endearingly dedicated as ever, Detective Constable “Dangerous” Davies (Peter Davison, Doctor Who, All Creatures Great & Small) return to solve four new, full-length mysteries, His wife left him, his coworkers sarcastically dubbed him “Dangerous” and his boss called him the “Last Detective” expected to crack a big case. He even listens to advice from his kooky chum Mod (Sean Hughes, The Commitments).

Continuing the legacy of “Dangerous Davies” is another 4 stories that tend to get better as the series itself progresses. There are some Dr Who alumni in the show with David Troughton and Lynda Bellingham. Again the episodes are just short of feature length and are quite enjoyable. This set has the same special features as series 1.

THE LAST DETECTIVE SERIES 3 TV DVD REVIEW

A blurb from Acorn Media about The Last Detective Series 3: Beleaguered by life and belittled by his colleagues, “Dangerous” Davies (Peter Davison, DOCTOR WHO, ALL CREATURES GREAT & SMALL) cracks four all-new cases in the detective series that has delighted legions of loyal fans.

Four more great stories arrive in this set for series 3. The relationship between Davies and Mod has grown more in a platonic way and Davies is still trying to have a relationship with a lady while solving crimes to his boss’s bewilderment! The special features are the same as series 1 & 2.

HERO HIGH:THE COMPLETE SERIES TV DVD REVIEW

A blurb from Entertainment Rights about “Hero High: The Complete Series: Welcome to Hero High, an institute of super learning for teenage heroes and heroines in training! These students aren’t always in control of their super powers, leading to hilarious misadventures. In 1981, Kid Super Power Hour with Shazam! Combining live-action skits, comedy, and songs with the animated adventures of Hero High and Shazam!

In 1981, The Kids Super Power Hour with Shazam! premiered on NBC. It was a combination of live action footage of the Hero High characters dressed up as to the parts they played and would also do the voices as well. Then they would show an episode from Hero High and an episode from the animated series of Shazam! The show lasted just one season and was one of the last true Saturday morning Children’s show before syndication took over because sadly in my opinion, there is no more Saturday Morning TV.
