The Lieutenant-Complete Series Part 1 DVD Review

Warner Archive has finally put out one of the most sought after series that has rarely been seen since its original airing “The Lieutenant” starring Gary Lockwood.  The series was created and produced by Gene Roddenberry made more famous after this series ended and went on to create the forever popular “Star Trek”!  Part one consists of the first 16 episodes of the hour long series with Lockwood as William Tiberius (Yes you read it right!) Rice, a second lieutenant in the Marine corp, stationed at Camp Pendleton as an instructor and his commanding officer, Captain Raymond Rambridge is played by none other than Robert Vaughn (The Man From UNCLE, Hustle).  Episodes during the series often reflected what Roddenberry would use in Trek such as Race Relations, equality, and the escalating Vietnam War to get his point across.  Guest stars on this first set include Bill Bixby (Incredible Hulk), Jack Albertson (Chico & the Man), Norman Fell (Three’s Company), Chris Connolly (Peyton Place), Greg Morris (Mission: Impossible), Rip Torn (Easy Rider), Neville Brand (Stalag 17), James Gregory (Barney Miller), Pat Priest (The Munsters), Barbara Bain (Mission: Impossible, Space:1999), Harold Gould (The Sting), David White (Bewitched), Kenneth Tobey (It Came From Beneath The Sea), Ed Asner (Lou Grant), Katherine Ross (Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid), Ted Bessell (That Girl!), Sharon Farrell (Hawaii Five-O), John Hart (The Lone Ranger) and Eddie Albert (Green Acres).  There were three actors that were used in Roddenberry’s next series Star Trek on this set.  There were Michael Strong and Sherry Jackson (What Are Little Girls Made Of?) and Madlyn Rhue (Space Seed).
There are no extras on this set.

VIDEO

The video quality is great!  The series was done on film and no restoration has been done, yet the quality is great considering the age of the prints!   Each episode runs approx 50 mins.
